We would like to invite you to imagine a future in which nature and economy go hand in hand. In which we are motivated by our love of this stunning place to work together to keep our water clean, our landscapes wild and our community sustainable. We invite you to imagine a place where you feel rooted and connected, where your life is in balance, where you are inspired.
This dream of a connected, sustainable community doesn’t come about by itself, but we at Wildsight Elk Valley believe it’s possible. Together, through our combined actions, we can make an enormous difference.
One of our main focuses is Sustainable Food. With increasing demands on our natural world, it becomes ever more important to re-localize. Food that is sourced locally uses less fossil fuel to get here. Food that is grown without chemicals is better for humans and all living things. Food that is accessible across class and income level strengthens the fabric of the entire community. In other words, focus on food and the effects will be felt far and wide.
Projects we are involved in include:
- EcoGarden is an important hub of sustainability education and practice in the Elk Valley. Our school-based gardening programs nurture hands-on learning about food and food systems. Teaching kids how to think globally and act locally, we empower elementary students to grow their own gardens, from seed to harvest.
- ToolShare program gives you access to food processing tools like apple presses and dehydrators. Aiming to help our community make sure there are more apples for you and less for the bears, keeping us all safe and healthy.
- Local Store is a social enterprise we launched in 2020 to increase access to local food and support local farmers and small-scale producers.
- Cold Climate Seed Library hosts seed swaps, aims to preserve and continue to share local seed varieties that have adapted to our climate and educate.
We are inspired to turn passion into action and hope that you can join us!
