Meadowbrook Education

Program Overview

Impressive efforts from local residents have resulted in recent successful conservation measures at McGinty Lake. The lake is located on Crown land just 10km east of Kimberley and has recently been granted Interpretive Forest status through strong efforts by the Meadowbrook Community Association.

Our partnership has resulted in free wetland education for primary students in Kimberley every spring and fall. Grade 1-8 classes are offered half-day field trips, exploring the McGinty Lake Interpretive Forest and wetland ecosystems. Through grade-specific programs linked to learning outcomes in BC’s new curriculum, and a variety of interactive teaching methods including props, games, and local examples, we seek to foster a curiosity in nature. Students develop a deeper respect for and understanding of our natural places, working towards a long-term increase in environmental stewardship.

Program Opportunities

Alongside our field trip opportunities, we also offer short, optional pre and post trip in-class activities that allow teachers to be active partners in expanding the learning outcomes. The curriculum-link topical themes include: adaptations, mayfly lifecycles, biodiversity, Be a Water Molecule, interconnections, and macro-invertebrate systems.

For more information, to book a field trip, or become a volunteer supervisor, please contact Kim Urbaniak: kim@wildsight.ca.
