A FREE event on November 20th for all to learn more about your wonderful neighbours – the Columbia Lake Bighorn Sheep herd! Or, as they’re known in the Ktunaxa language: kwiǂqǂi.
Registration is optional but helps us to plan, thank you.
If you live in Canal Flats, Fairmont and surrounding communities or enjoy the trails on the east side of Columbia Lake, you might have been lucky enough to see these Bighorn Sheep in the wild – groups of ewes and lambs grazing peacefully, or maybe a bunch of bachelors showing off. Perhaps you’ve even had them visit you at home (several housing areas, especially new developments, are right in the middle of the sheep’s winter grazing territory!). As the sheep navigate new challenges, we can enjoy these wildlife encounters and at the same time learn how to protect this iconic species and keep them wild and flourishing.
Come and find out more with interactive displays, kid-friendly activities, discussion panel, and screening of ‘Transmission’, a documentary film about the M. ovi threat to wild sheep.
You’ll have a chance to talk with:
- Provincial wildlife biologists and ecologists,
- Hunters and sheep specialists from the Wild Sheep Society of BC and the Canal Flats Wilderness Club
- Ktunaxa ʔa·knusti (guardians)
- local sheep farmers
- conservation specialists
- and passionate local sheep enthusiasts
to understand what the sheep need to stay healthy and thrive, and how you can help.
Delicious appetizers will be served and a door prize draw means one lucky attendee will go home with this gorgeous canvas print by local artist Leslie Cartwright.
