Job Summary
The Communications Manager oversees all internal and external communications for the Local store. They will ensure consistent, timely, and values-aligned messaging. This multi-faceted and engaging role blends marketing, digital skill development, community outreach, and operational communication support.
This position also includes tasks to support Wildsight Elk Valley–a non profit organization–in their seasonal and ongoing projects. The Communications Manager would provide essential support for Wildisight’s seasonal programs, including the educational initiatives Little Sprouts, the Tool Share, Keeping Food Real (KFR) and other community-focused activities and ongoing projects.
This seasonal position is sponsored in-part by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant and is intended for a current student (can be between semesters/terms), between the ages of 15 and 30 years old. Due to the nature of the grant, this position is funded for 8 consecutive weeks during the busiest season for Local and Wildsight Elk Valley branch.
Overview of Tasks
- Communication and Marketing
- Develop and implement a communications and marketing plan focused on Local food and farmers during high season
- Use social media engagement data to develop and support their marketing
Manage the store’s Meta Business Suite, including creating and scheduling content across Instagram and Facebook - Assist in writing copy for monthly newsletters (both Local’s and Wildsight’s)
- Keep our WordPress website up to date
- Reach out and collaborate with farmers, growers, and local producers to highlight their stories, production practices, and new product arrivals
- Communicate with branch volunteers and board members to outline their work for the branch
- Retail Support in Local
- Work under the Retail Coordinators and Store Manager to assist at the cash register, restock and face products on the sales floor, receive deliveries and track inventory
Learning how Local operates will be crucial in understanding how to best implement creative marketing strategies and ideas

- Garden Education
- Assist in facilitating the Little Sprouts garden program
- Help with administrative work for Wildsight Elk Valley’s Community EcoGarden
- Branch Administration
- Support other seasonal Wildsight programming
- Be the main point of contact for Wildsight Elk Valley
- Prepare any necessary reports for, and attend monthly board meetings
Qualifications
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Friendly, approachable, and passionate about food sustainability
- Social media competency (Instagram, Facebook)
- Ability to work weekdays and/or weekends through July and August
- Graphic design (Canva) and photography skills a great advantage
- Experience using WordPress an asset
- Experience with not-for-profit organizations an asset
Legal Requirements
- A current student, aged 15 – 30 years
- Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, S.C. 2001, c. 27*; and
Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents
About Local
Local is a community-powered local food store and social enterprise operated by the non-profit, Wildsight Elk Valley. The store aims to support the local food system through a low-barrier model that allows small-scale farmers and sustainable producers to get their product to market. The store seeks to improve year-round access to local, Canadian food. The Branch’s overall mission as a non-profit is to cultivate a thriving, knowledgeable, and resilient local food culture in the Elk Valley.
Organizational Background
Wildsight Elk Valley is a branch of Wildsight, a BC registered non-profit organization,
governed by an engaged Board of Directors and supported by active members and
volunteers. Wildsight’s work aims to promote environmental stewardship and
conservation in our community.
The Elk Valley Branch prioritizes support for locally-produced food and food-growing
space. Our passionate volunteers established and continue to manage the
Community EcoGarden, the Cold Climate Seed Library, Keeping Food Real
cold-climate gardening course, Elk Valley ToolShare, and the Local Store. We work
together with Wildsight Regional and the five other Wildsight Branches.
