The Kimberley Open Gate Garden is located on Rotary Dr. behind the Aquatic Centre, and it is ALWAYS OPEN. Stop by and enjoy local fresh produce, expand your gardening knowledge and find a safe space to learn and grow. The garden is open to anyone at any time and has everything you need stored on site. Our shed is full of handy tools, gloves and a sign-in book where you can outline what you accomplished during your visit. There is also a white board hanging on the inside of the door—it outlines ongoing projects, one-time tasks and lets you know what’s ready to harvest. If you contribute to the garden, please add to the lists so we can keep the garden functioning at its peak.
This summer we have had a number of work bees in the garden including: lasagna gardening; herb drying; biodiversity demonstrations hosted by the Kootenay Society for Sustainable Living; an ‘All About Compost’ demonstration where we educated people about our garden compost system and gave our system a little TLC; and a Weed & Feed where we took some time to weed the garden and then made some fresh garden salsa – the majority of the ingredients came from the garden itself!
The success of the garden is rooted in our volunteers so we would like to give a big shout out to those who took the time to come out to these work bees and/or have worked in the garden on their own time. You make the garden a success!
Come out on Sunday September 23rd for our Fifth Annual Harvest Party. However, please do not wait until then to get involved! Our garden is your garden, so please come check it out and make yourself at home.
