Interested in helping out with Wildsight’s Protecting Revelstoke’s Turtles and Toads Project? Join us on April 24th at Williamson Lake to learn the necessary skills required to volunteer. Please note this training event is mandatory in order to participate in the citizen science activities.
There are 4 different volunteer opportunities:
1) Volunteer Opportunity #1: Toad Watch 10:00 am to 11:00 am
Wildsight Revelstoke is seeking volunteers to help mitigate Western Toad road mortality along Airport Way road. During spring and fall migration periods, toads travel across the road to reach their desired habitat and, consequently, many are squished by passing vehicles. In an effort to mitigate this road-based mortality, volunteers will be staged along Airport Way in the evening (after dusk) to help move individuals across the road and out of harm’s way.
2) Volunteer Opportunity #2: Turtle and Toad Reporting – 11:00 am to 12:00 pm
Learn how you can report your Western Painted Turtle and Western Toad sightings to contribute to the Protecting Revelstoke’s Turtles and Toads Project.
3) Volunteer Opportunity #3: Williamson Lake Blitz – 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm
Wildsight Revelstoke and Living Lakes Canada are partnering to bring the Lake Blitz to Revelstoke. Participants will monitor Williamson Lake 1-4 times per month from June to September. Using the Lake Blitz Field Guide instructions, participants will sample for water and air temperatures and snap photos of the shoreline and water.
4) Volunteer Opportunity #4: Invasive species reporting – 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm
Participants will learn how to report invasive species sightings using the iNaturalist app and the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Council (CSISS) will discuss the negative impacts of invasive species in the context of the Protecting Revelstoke’s Turtles and Toads and how, through citizen science, we can help to prevent them.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and feel free to bring a blanket or a camping chair to sit on during the presentations. There will be a lunch break between 12:00 and 12:30 and coffee & snacks will be provided.
