Deep in the heart of British Columbia’s interior, more than 500 km from the sea, the Inland Temperate Rainforest is the last inland rainforest left on Earth that is somewhat intact. Dominated by ancient cedar and hemlock trees, its understorey provides a cool microclimate where rare lichens thrive, and caribou walk trails their ancestors established generations ago.
Rainforest might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of the forests near Golden, but if you know which valleys to look in, the Inland Temperate Rainforest can still be found here. This precious ecosystem is disappearing at an alarming rate.
Join Wildsight Conservation Specialist Eddie Petryshen on April 28 as he speaks about the Inland Temperate Rainforest of the Upper Columbia, the creatures that depend on it, and what we can do to help protect it before it’s lost forever.
This event is free but space is limited; please register to reserve your seat. Donations welcome!
About our speaker
Eddie Petryshen is a Kimberley-based conservationist and Conservation Specialist with Wildsight. For the past decade he has focused his efforts on protecting biodiversity, old growth ecosystems, and recovering BC’s deep snow caribou.
He spends much of his time reviewing forestry proposals, poring over maps and satellite imagery, liaising with forestry companies, lobbying the government for change, and traipsing through remote corners of our region to ground truth proposed cut blocks and the critters that inhabit these forests. His work has resulted in successful protections for old and ancient stands in B.C.’s Inland Temperate Rainforest, and other old growth forests across the Columbia and Rocky Mountains. Eddie’s ability to turn research into story has inspired thousands to take action for old growth and endangered species across the province.
