Do you love seeing the bats come out at night and want to contribute to citizen science? Come help count bats emerge from select buildings with the Kootenay Community Bat Project: Golden Chapter! Some of these buildings have been monitored for years which helps scientists track changes to populations.
First count is on Wednesday, June 3rd, 8:45-10:30 pm, 1239 Campbell Road. First time counters are encouraged to attend to get a short presentation before the counting begins. After this there will be more opportunities to count in June and July; email for dates and to sign up for one or more bat count nights.
Time commitment: Approximately 2hr per site, beginning 30 minute before sunset.
What you need to know:
- No experience needed!
- If you have never counted bats before, you will receive an orientation and information about these amazing creatures.
- Bring a chair and your choice of insect repellent or bug proof clothing.
- Counters do not touch bats and will be set up to count the bats without coming in contact with them.
Older children may be interested but it will be a late night (darkness does not come early on summer nights).
