Golden's Community Invasive Plant Program

Invasive species are considered to be the second largest threat to biodiversity worldwide, second only to habitat loss. To help stop the spread of invasive plants, Wildsight Golden initiated Golden’s Community Invasive Plant Program in 2010, which has been successfully and effectively operating every year since. It is through this program that the Golden branch of Wildsight, the Town of Golden and the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Plant Committee are working collaboratively to raise awareness and promote management of the invasive plant species that we have growing in Golden.

To date, this program has involved hundreds of volunteers and has employed 2-3 people each summer for 10 years. The program has also enabled for the removal of close to 2,000 bags of invasive plants in our community. It has also engaged local citizens who have participated in Golden’s Annual Community Weed Pull events.

Wildsight Golden has also been raising awareness of invasive plants by conducting invasive plant inventories on private lands to participating community members. Through this, we are helping people identify invasive plant species found on their private property, as well as providing residents with information regarding best methods for removing harmful plants using non-toxic methods.

Wildsight Golden regularly attends Farmers Market during the summer months in order to provide information on invasive plants and Golden’s Pesticide Bylaw as well as additional Wildsight programs and events.
