Wildsight Golden – Community Invasive Plant Program

  • Term: 14-week contract position

Do you enjoy working outdoors, care about protecting local ecosystems, and like engaging with your community? Wildsight Golden is seeking a motivated individual to coordinate the Golden Community Invasive Plant Program, a hands-on initiative focused on invasive plant management, education, and community engagement.

This program is delivered in partnership with the Town of Golden and Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Council and supports local efforts to reduce the spread and impacts of invasive plants through field work, outreach, and volunteer events.

 

About Wildsight Golden

Wildsight Golden is a local branch of Wildsight, a regional environmental organization working to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable communities throughout the Columbia Basin. The Golden branch focuses on community-based conservation initiatives, environmental education, and stewardship programs that engage residents in protecting the landscapes and ecosystems we all depend on.

 

Position Overview

The Invasive Plant Program Coordinator will lead the delivery of the 2026 Community Invasive Plant Program. The role combines field work, public outreach, and program coordination.

This position is well suited for someone interested in environmental conservation, invasive species management, community engagement, or environmental education.

 

Key Responsibilities

Program Coordination and Planning

  • Participate in program orientation and training with the CIPP Project Manager, including review of program materials and visits to priority treatment sites.
  • Review past program documentation and recommendations to help guide the 2026 field season.
  • Coordinate with the Town of Golden regarding invasive plant bag collection and disposal.
  • Work with the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS) to support program activities and community outreach.

Field Work and Monitoring

  • Revisit and maintain invasive plant treatment sites from previous years to prevent re-establishment.
  • Monitor restoration sites established between 2022–2025 to evaluate effectiveness and determine future management needs.
  • Conduct invasive plant inventories for interested homeowners (target: at least five site visits) to assist residents with identification and management strategies.

Outreach and Community Engagement

  • Host 2–3 outreach booths at the Golden Farmers’ Market, providing information about invasive plants, their impacts, and the Town’s pesticide-free bylaw.
  • Organize and lead two Community Weed Pull events, including volunteer coordination, promotion, and event logistics.
  • Deliver three “Go Wild” educational sessions as part of Wildsight Golden’s summer children’s camps.
  • Develop and implement a communications and outreach plan, including social media posts, media releases, and Wildsight Golden e-newsletter content.

Data Management and Reporting

  • Complete training with CSISS on the provincial Invasive Alien Plant Program (IAPP) database and field data collection tools.
  • Record field observations and treatment data throughout the season.
  • Enter survey and treatment data into the IAPP database.
  • Prepare a final report summarizing program activities, outcomes, and recommendations.

 

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Hard-working, reliable, and self-motivated
  • Comfortable working outdoors and performing physically demanding tasks
  • Organized and able to work independently
  • Friendly and confident engaging with the public
  • Passionate about environmental conservation

 

Assets

The following are considered strong assets:

  • Degree, diploma, or enrolment in environmental studies, biology, ecology, or a related field
  • Experience with plant identification or invasive plant management
  • Experience in environmental education, outreach, or volunteer coordination
  • Familiarity with local ecosystems in the Columbia Valley
  • Experience with data entry, GIS, Google Drive and Canva.

Training and mentorship will be provided.
