Last summer, smoke was a regular part of our lives here in Golden. With wildfire seasons becoming longer and more severe across British Columbia, communities like ours are feeling the impact of prolonged exposure to smoke-filled air.
In response, a new community initiative is helping residents take matters into their own hands. A hands-on do-it-yourself (DIY) Air Filter Workshop will guide participants in building their own simple home air purifiers to reduce smoke exposure—an effective way to improve indoor air quality during wildfire events.
With wildfire smoke posing serious health risks—even hundreds of kilometres from the source—this is a practical, accessible way for individuals and families to protect their health and boost community resilience.
Smoke affects us all, and in order to make this event as accessible as possible, all materials will be provided for a minimal fee of $10 per participant, though the actual value of the equipment is over $100 per unit. Additional donations are welcome to help offset the costs. The event is open to all, but space is limited so we encourage you to register early. This is a pilot project that could be repeated based on community interest. Residents who are unable to attend but would like to participate in the future are encouraged to get in touch at goldenairquality@wildsight.ca.
