Job Description
The Elk Valley is home to both world class wilderness and wildlife and world class coal deposits. We work to protect the wildlife and water values of this important region, while minimizing our industrial footprint and impact on the landscape. The Elk Valley Program Coordinator will be based in the Elk Valley and play a lead role in community engagement. The Elk Valley Program Coordinator will work closely with Wildsight’s Conservation Team and the Flathead Wild coalition, focusing on responsible mining and living with wildlife in the Elk Valley.

Responsible Mining:

  • Review of impacts, regulations, permits and plans, engagement in environmental assessments and community engagement processes for new proposed mines and mine expansions in the Elk Valley
  • Community engagement, campaigning and communications on mining impacts and water quality issues; building local support to improve mining practices and reduce water pollution
  • Direct engagement with Teck on mining-related and water quality issues in the Elk Valley
  • Direct engagement with other mining companies, as necessary, regarding proposed new mines
  • Participation in provincial and federal coalitions, working groups and processes in regards to coal mining, water quality and environmental assessment regulations
  • Participation in the Elk Valley Cumulative Effects Management Framework process and local wildlife coalitions

Living with Wildlife: Transportation, Connectivity and Coexistence

  • Roadwatch BC: Oversight, promotion and community engagement for RoadWatch, a project that engages the Elk Valley in tracking wildlife and wildlife fatalities on highways and advances the need for wildlife crossing structures and other mitigation measures along Highway 3
  • CP Rail corporate engagement: Develop relationship with CP Rail and advance discussions on wildlife mortality and the adoption of procedures that minimize wildlife mortality on the rails
  • Wildlife coexistence and connectivity: Community engagement and campaigning to develop support for strong measures to improve coexistence with wildlife

Requirements:

  • A background in water quality, biology, environmental aspects of mining is a strong asset
  • Experience in environmental or community advocacy work is a strong asset
  • Post-secondary education in biology, environmental science or other relevant sciences is a strong asset
  • Live in the Elk Valley
  • You are a strong communicator, both verbal and written, and have experience engaging with the public, media and government
  • You have strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with a proven ability to interpret scientific data and reports
  • You are able to work independently and as part of a team, including being able to work remotely
  • Having experience organizing community events is an asset
  • You have a passion for wild places and sustainable communities

About us: Wildsight, an environmental charity with a 30-year history, works to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable communities in the Columbia and Kootenay region of British Columbia. Our main office is located in Kimberley, and we work together with five autonomous branches within the East Kootenay. Wildsight offers a flexible working environment that includes flexible hours and five weeks of annual vacation and a health bonus. Our team of about 10 people is based in the Kootenays, with six staff working out of our Kimberley office.

This position is a contract position. Successful candidates are expected to have access to a working space (home-based is fine) and a computer. Some flexibility is required, with evening and weekend work and travel.

Remuneration: Commensurate with experience.
