Sewing 101: Learn how to fix your own clothing and reduce textile waste to landfill and prioritising repairing over replacing textiles.
Wildsight Invermere’s first repair cafe will teach you the basics on fixing your textiles, encouraging participants to repair before replacing their clothing. Sally Johnson will be facilitating this workshop by donation, assisting attendees in fixing their own clothing. Bring along a few items you would like help fixing. Sewing machines are also welcome. Please RSVP as spaces are limited.
Invite your friends, bring along some snacks and drinks and learn or improve your sewing skills to fix your textiles before replacing them.
A 2023 study by the University of Waterloo revealed that Canadians dispose of nearly 500 million kilograms of fabric each year. This staggering amount includes clothing, household linens, and other fabric-based products. Unfortunately, most of these textiles – about 85% – end up in landfills. This is the first event for the Columbia Valley Shift program, that aims to shift the Columbia Valley to a more sustainable circular economy model, with this event focusing on reducing waste to landfill.
This is the first of the repair café series. We hope to facilitate more repair cafes throughout the year.
