Wildsight brings ‘Trouble in the Headwaters’ film tour to Fernie, Golden and Kimberley

This November, Wildsight is bringing communities together for a thought-provoking film tour examining the connections between clearcut logging, flooding, and the health of our watersheds.

From November 22–24, audiences in Fernie, Golden and Kimberley will have the opportunity to watch Trouble in the Headwaters, a powerful new documentary that investigates how extensive clearcut logging contributed to the devastating 2018 flooding event in Grand Forks, BC.

Featuring Dr. Younes Alila, a professor of forest hydrology at the University of British Columbia, the film sheds light on how climate change coupled with a loss of forest cover can influence patterns of flooding, landslides and drought — and offers lessons that are relevant to many local communities.

Both Dr. Alila and the film’s director, Daniel J. Pierce, will be present at each screening for a post-film discussion with local experts to explore the state of our watersheds, and discuss what needs to be done to improve their management.

“Watersheds are the lifeblood of our communities, and all living things” says Tim Chapman, Wildsight Forestry Specialist. “The Grand Forks flood disaster was a warning for us all that the choices being made in the forests around us can have direct consequences for the health and safety of our watersheds and communities.”

Admission is by donation, with proceeds supporting Wildsight’s conservation and community engagement initiatives. Registration is strongly encouraged to reserve your seat.
