Recreation on lakes has always evolved. Imagine yourself on a lake in the early 1960’s. You’re sitting in a small sailboat. A gentle breeze fills the sail. The water is quiet, the shoreline peaceful. The technology is simple, the pace is slower, and people enjoy the lake in a relatively low-impact way.
By the 1970’s, small fishing boats and motorboats are becoming increasingly familiar parts of lake life. Windsurfing also gains popularity, with bright sails and a spirit of adventure, offering more speed and excitement while still relying on wind, human skill, and balance.
Now fast forward to today. The lake is still beautiful, but recreation has changed in ways few could have imagined. Boats are larger, engines are more powerful, and some vessels are specifically designed to generate a surfable wave. That innovation has created a new recreational experience, but it has also raised new management questions, particularly on shallow or ecologically sensitive lakes. At some point, this is no longer just a change in how we recreate; it becomes a change in the scale of our impact on the lake.
That raises an important question: What happens when recreation technology advances faster than the science, policies, and regulations intended to manage it? It is about recognizing that every lake has limits and that recreational activities should be matched to the characteristics of the lake itself. Not every activity belongs on every lake.
Many paddlers, swimmers, anglers, families in small boats, and older residents may limit their time or simply avoid the water during busy summer weekends. Large wakes, crowded conditions, and constant wave action make the experience less enjoyable and, in some cases, less safe. This is not about choosing one group of lake users over another.
Regulations have struggled to keep pace with rapidly evolving recreational technology. Rules developed decades ago for conventional boating were never designed with modern boats in mind. The objective is not to reduce recreation opportunities. It is to manage recreation in ways that reflect the ecological and physical characteristics of individual lakes.
A lake suitability approach offers a practical path forward. Research indicates that effects are site specific. Risk varies with water depth, distance from shore, wave energy, lakebed sediment, shoreline form, and the presence of sensitive habitat. Every lake differs in these characteristics and should help determine which recreational activities are appropriate and where they can occur safely and sustainably.
The goal is not less recreation. The goal is recreation that protects what people came to enjoy in the first place: clean water, healthy wetlands, thriving fish and wildlife habitat, intact shorelines, and space for everyone.
Technology will continue to evolve. Recreation will continue to change. Stewardship and management must evolve with them. If we want future generations to enjoy these lakes as much as previous generations have, our management decisions must reflect today’s realities rather than yesterday’s assumptions.
The principle is simple: the right activity, in the right place, on the right lake. That is how recreation and our lakes can thrive together.
