Wildsight Invermere is the voice of environmental conservation in the Columbia Valley. Our strength lies in our grassroots engagement to promote environmental stewardship and to address local issues around sustainability and climate change.  We are currently looking for a motivated individual who can work independently with direction from our Branch Manager. The job offers flexibility and opportunities to develop creative programming that supports our vision and mandate.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

The Climate Change Resilience Coordinator will help build Wildsight Invermere’s climate change resilience programming, communications and outreach strategies. The scope of this role will be somewhat dependent on abilities of candidate and their past experience and education. This position requires a dynamic individual who will be responsible for program development and management, communications, outreach, and administration.

The position is five days/week, starting Sept 1, 2020 for an 8-month period ending March 31, 2020. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview

  • Explore the development of a Community Climate Hub in Invermere, linking to the East Kootenay regional climate movement, and linked to the national Climate Reality Climate Hub movement. 
  • Develop a youth climate engagement strategy or project working to support the local Fridays for Future group. 
    Meet with a group of engaged youth, supported by Wildsight’s youth board member. Develop and implement a plan or project to support what the youth identify as their focus or interest.
  • Liaise with the District of Invermere and the Regional District of East Kootenay to understand and promote their sustainability goals for the region. The intern will work with the District of Invermere to identify areas of the district’s sustainability plan that Wildsight could help promote or educate the community about.
  • Identify a sustainability goal appropriate to the area, develop a project plan and implement. The project could be related to alternative transportation such as a bike path, regional transportation, etc. This plan and project will be fully supported by the Branch Manager and Board of Directors. 

Communications & Outreach

  • Prepare a monthly blog or article on a relevant climate change topic for publishing in local paper as well as website.
  • Help promote the Electric Car Share program run by Wildsight Invermere by creating materials such as social media and web content. Be involved in the day to day administrative running of the carshare program which involves regular checking of booking system on the website.  Assist with the weekly cleaning and oversight of the car.
  • Help develop events (COVID permitting) or webinars on pertinent climate change sustainability subjects. This is part of the broader Wildsight Invermere program plan so the intern will work with the Branch Manager and the Board to identify topics and support event preparation. 

 Essential Requirements

  • Committed environmental ethic. 
  • Completed a Post-Secondary Degree in areas related to environment, education, management, communications or other related fields.
  • Experience with community engagement, project development.
  • Be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Strong computer skills.
