Great Backyard Bird Count

Each February since 1998, the entire world comes together for the love of birds! This count is an inter-organizational effort between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada.

Over these four days (which in Canada is the Family Long Weekend, February 12-15), people are invited to spend time in their favourite places with their favourite people watching and counting as many birds as they can. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before their annual migrations take place.

So … polish off your binoculars and fill up your bird feeders! Counting birds is one of the safest and most rewarding activities that can be done from the comfort of your home or neighbourhood.

Participating is easy, fun to do alone or with others, and can be done anywhere you find wild birds. To be a citizen scientist, here is what you can do:

All you need is a free Cornell Lab account. Submit one or more lists over the 4 days.
